REVIEW: Coates Talent League Girls Round 5

A review of Round 5 in the Coates Talent League Girls.

Round 5 began with a clash between Dandenong Stingrays and Oakleigh Chargers under lights at Shepley Oval on Friday night. The home side started well, with first-quarter goals to Sophie Butterworth and Brooke Smith giving the Stingrays a 14-point advantage at the first change. However, Oakleigh gradually worked its way back into the game and was able to run over the top of its host to improve its record to 3-0. The Chargers trailed by three points at the last change, before kicking three goals in the final 15 minutes to secure an 18-point win. Sarah Poustie and Maggie Mahony led the way and combined for 46 possessions, while Amelie Gladman’s two goals in the final term were crucial. Mikayla Williamson continued her strong form for the Stingrays, while Tahlia Sanger also impressed.

Eastern Ranges made the trip to University of Tasmania Stadium to take on fellow unbeaten side Tasmania Devils and put in an eye-catching performance. The Ranges were wasteful in the first term and lead by only 11 points, despite recording six more scoring shots. However, they made up for it across the next three quarters, extending their advantage at every break to run away with a 75-point win and leapfrog the Devils into third spot on the ladder. Laura Stone was exceptional with 26 disposals, five tackles and six inside-50s. Georgia Pruden (16 disposals, one goal), Grace Belloni (20 disposals, two goals) and Georgia Knight (four goals) also played a major part in the result. Madi Lamb was Tasmana’s leading ball winner with 23 disposals, while Eva Downie and Meg Harrison also toiled hard as their side fell to its first defeat of the campaign.

Calder Cannons retained top spot on the ladder with a hard-earned 17-point win over Western Jets in heavy conditions at Avalon Airport Oval. In a low-scoring affair, the Cannons took control in the second term to take a 22-point lead into the main break and were able to maintain a buffer throughout the second half, despite the Jets challenging right through to the final siren. Kyla Forbes (26 disposals, two goals) and Kayley Kavanagh (30 disposals, nine tackles) were again in red-hot form for Calder, with strong support from ruck Ellie Sbeghen and Maddison Ford. For the Western Jets, Megan Smart, Kiera Leare and Gracie Lamers featured among the better players, while Sierra Greives had a game-high 35 disposals and a whopping 16 tackles.

Northern Knights won a thriller against Sandringham Dragons at RSEA Park in one of the games of the season on Sunday. The Knights raced out of the blocks with the opening three goals in the first eight minutes, before the Dragons settled into the game. The visitors lead to by a solitary behind at the last change, with a goal to Nessa Cooney-Hunt five minutes into the final quarter proving to be the final major of the game and enough for the Knights to register their second win of the year. Ava Jordan’s 30 disposals were seven more than any other player, while Matilda Fitzgerald and Tahlia Plunkett also impressed. Georgia Foran (19 disposals, seven rebound-50s) and Shaedyn Aylen (23 disposals) were the Dragons’ best players.

Match replays are available on the Coates Talent League app. Replays will also be available on AFL On Demand by the Tuesday after each round.
